Wales Development Manager
Craig Roberts was appointed Wales Development Manager to Making Music in July 2010 and is the first port of call for all Making Music Wales enquiries.
Based in South Wales, Craig has enjoyed a successful career as a professional conductor, tutor, events manager and musical arranger across the UK and beyond. He gained first his BA (Hons) then MA Masters degree at the University of Salford studying with Dr Roy Newsome and Prof David King. Whilst at the university Craig was awarded the Roy Newsome conducting prize as the outstanding undergraduate conductor of the academic year 2000.
Within the UK Craig has performed in most of the country’s finest concert halls including the Wales Millennium Centre, St David’s Hall, and the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff; Symphony Hall, Birmingham; The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester; The Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool; and the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and Royal Academy of Music, London. Internationally Craig has toured to America, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, North Africa and Russia.
Both at home and abroad Craig has worked on a wide variety of large scale and innovative concert projects with numerous leading ensembles and artists which have included the Stadtorchester Ravensburg and Stadtkapelle Nurtingen of Germany, the Russian Cossack State Dance Company, Errollyn Wallen and the Welsh National Opera Company, Tim A. Duncan and the Imperial Ice Stars, Steve Bingham, Shan Cothi, Rebecca Evans, Catrin Finch, Joji Hirota and the Japanese Taiko Drummers, Peter Karrie, Andrew Powell, James Watson, plus various and numerous leading bands and choirs which have included the Band of Her Majesty’s Grenadier Guards, Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick and Leyland brass bands, and choirs Cor Meibion Morlais, Pendyrus Male Choir, Treorchy Male Choir, the Richard Williams Singers and Gentlemen Songsters, the Vivace Singers, Serendipity and Only Men Aloud.
Within Wales Craig has conducted the majority of the top brass bands and has been successful in competition at the highest level, winning the Welsh League Championship on two occasions (2006 and 2009). He was named Conductor of the Year by the SEWBBA and WWBBA in 2004. For a number of years Craig was also Director of Music of the Woods Mfg Co Band based in Stittsville, Ontario, Canada. He directed the band at several of the world’s largest military shows including the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax, Canada; the Virginia International Tattoo in Norfolk, USA; the Netherlands Nationale Taptoe in Breda, Holland and the Polizei Show of Hamburg, Germany.
Today, in addition to his work with Making Music, Craig is a member of the Production Team of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, where he is one of the Assistant Directors and principal Musical Arrangers and Directors of Music for this, the world’s largest annual indoor show. He has also worked for a number of years on the Canadian Beating Retreat “Fortissimo” held on Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario; travelled to Russia, to work with the Kremlin Zoria Festival on a Tattoo held in Moscow's Red Square; and to Tripoli, Libya, where in 2009 he acted as Musical Advisor and Principal Director of Music to the World Military Music Festival, held in Green Square, Tripoli.
In addition to all of the above Craig still supplies brass tuition to number of schools and young musicians in South Wales, and is also a serving member of the Executive Council of the home of Welsh music, Ty Cerdd.
