The Making Music Overture
The Making Music Overture is Making Music’s own London 2012 inspired project. An official Cultural Olympiad project, the Overture was launched as part of Music Nation, a countdown event for the London 2012 Festival, and finale of the Cultural Olympiad.
The overture is a new work that we hope will become as well known as Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture through at least 150 performances by Making Music member groups in the run-up to the Olympic Games in 2012. The work is supported with funds from the PRS for Music Foundation
The project has been planned so that groups of all abilities and genres can be involved. This is your opportunity to take part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, wherever you are in the UK. An opportunity to form new partnerships, reach new audiences, benefit from publicity and PR, and to offer local audiences an opportunity to celebrate with you.
Orlando Gough has been commissioned to write the Making Music Overture. Orlando, who will collaborate with Guyanese/British poet John Agard, says 'The piece will investigate, in a serious but frisky way, the experience of being British today, and will be capable of performance in a village hall, in a town square or on a massive stage.' The piece is approximately 15 minutes long and flexibly scored for almost any kind of group, choral or instrumental. Training can also be arranged to help your music director tailor the piece to your group, and Making Music will also support members to publicise their events
Further information on the Making Music Overture, and how you can acquire your free copy and become involved in the project, can be found at the main Making Music site here, where you can now also here an audio file of the piece and view sample study scores. You can also register your interest in the project and the overture direct here plus listen to a demo of the piece below:

Commission Opportunity - Park & Dare Theatre Centenary
The Park and Dare Theatre, Treorchy
Centenary Celebrations 1913-2013
Cân Yr Adeilad / Song Of The Building
Composer Recruitment Brief
Rhondda Cynon Taf CBC Cultural Services & the RCT Music Service are seeking to commission a composer to create a musical work (score and lyrics) to commemorate and celebrate the centenary of the Park & Dare Theatre Treorchy in 2013.
The producers are seeking submissions from composers who have a track record in the creation and delivery of community based musical projects which, whilst being professionally led, fully engage and enable the creative participation of the communities, (including students, pupils, Special school, adult groups) in the area served by this historic and significant cultural building.
The chosen composer will need to demonstrate their ability to work on time and within budget leading a creative team which will consist of a Musical Director (who could also lead on the recording process), a vocal animateur and two professional musicians who can lead the music workshops in school and community settings. We would expect any lyrics to reflect the bilingual nature of this community.
The composer of this work will need to be able to capture the musical life of this iconic building across a century which will have witnessed the Park & Dare Theatre make the transition from silent movies to the “talkies”, played host to the significant musical organisations of the town (e.g. the Treorchy Male Voice Choir / the Parc & Dare Band); hosted annual productions by the great local musical theatre societies such as Spotlight, Selsig and Mid Rhondda and, in more recent times hosted significant musical performances by acts as diverse as Ray Davies OBE of the Kinks, Courtney Pine OBE, Richard Thompson OBE, Julian Lloyd Webber, Gruff Rhys and Cerys Matthews.
The outputs for the project will be the production of an audio CD and four performances of the completed work in March 2013.
The fee for the composer is £5000. The project will separately fund the rest of the creative team, the production of the CD and live performances and will also be responsible for the marketing of same.
Submissions should be made by 11th June and interviews will be held on Friday 22nd June at the Park & Dare Theatre Treorchy

Celebrate the Bandstand Marathon - Perform at your local bandstand, and earn £100 for your group!
As part of the Cultural Olympiad, the Bandstand Marathon will once more take place throughout parks and town centres across the UK on Sunday 9 September this year. The Marathon is run by South West based company Superact!, now in partnership with Making Music.
Bandstand Marathon aims to humanise public spaces by having as many groups performing on as many bandstands and outdoor performances spaces all at the same time on the same day throughout the UK, and this year £100 is being offered to each group that participates.
To register your interest and find your nearest venue, visit the Bandstand Marathon website.
The event, now in its fifth year, celebrates local amateur musical talent; reflecting the amateur athletes who will be participating in the 2012 Games. It also makes use of the many historic bandstands that adorn our local parks and town centres; many of which are underused or never used at all and we hope to revitalise and reinvigorate them. Please note that the event is not limited to bands, or even just instrumental ensembles - all musical groups are welcome, and encouraged to, participate.
Full and detailed information on the project can also be found on the Making Music website at http://www.makingmusic.org.uk/our-work/news/news/celebrate-the-bandstand-marathon

- Support imaginative, high quality co-commissions of new musical works by UK-based music creators in a framework which guarantees more than one performance in different UK countries.
- Encourage partnerships and sharing of expertise between organisations in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England which are committed to the commissioning of new music and the development of local and regional audiences.
- Support projects which are genuinely collaborative and have been developed jointly by the partners involved.
- Enable the funding partners to contribute more significantly to UK-wide new music sector development.
Support is offered to projects which
- Are joint commissions between at least two (but preferably more) organisations in different UK countries
- Commission new work of any genre from UK-resident music creators (e.g. composers/songwriters/producers)
- Are genuinely new and innovative, jointly-devised commissions push the boundaries of a music creator's work
- Result in the commissioned work having at least two confirmed performances in different UK countries.
Overall the PRSF is looking for proposals for exciting and intriguing pieces of new music. Whilst music should be the focus of the commission, genuine cross-artform collaborations will be supported, and particular interest will be shown to projects involving contemporary dance.
