The Making Music Overture

Picture
The Making Music Overture is Making Music’s own London 2012 inspired project. An official Cultural Olympiad project, the Overture will launch as part of Music Nation, a countdown event for the London 2012 Festival, and finale of the Cultural Olympiad.

The overture is a new work that we hope will become as well known as Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture through at least 150 performances by Making Music member groups in the run-up to the Olympic Games in 2012. The work is supported with funds from the PRS for Music Foundation

The project has been planned so that groups of all abilities and genres can be involved. This is your opportunity to take part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, wherever you are in the UK. An opportunity to form new partnerships, reach new audiences, benefit from publicity and PR, and to offer local audiences an opportunity to celebrate with you.

Orlando Gough has been commissioned to write the Making Music Overture. Orlando, who will collaborate with Guyanese/British poet John Agard, says 'The piece will investigate, in a serious but frisky way, the experience of being British today, and will be capable of performance in a village hall, in a town square or on a massive stage.' The piece is approximately 15 minutes long and flexibly scored for almost any kind of group, choral or instrumental. Training can also be arranged to help your music director tailor the piece to your group, and Making Music will also support members to publicise their events

Further information on the Making Music Overture, and how you can acquire your free copy and become involved in the project, can be found at the main Making Music site here, where you can now also here an audio file of the piece and view sample study scores. You can also register your interest in the project and the overture direct here plus listen to a demo of the piece below:

Picture
Deadline: 11 November 2011

Voluntary Arts presents the UK-wide Epic Awards 2011, designed to shine a spotlight on the excellent work taking place within more than 70,000 voluntary and amateur art and craft groups around the country.

The
epic awards give groups an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of their work as well as the chance to win a package of prizes including training, equipment and publicity. There will also be a winners’ reception in early 2012.

2010 winners included Cobweb Orchestra who performed a flash-mob Bolero; Apsara Arts with their Story of London project and fashion show; UC Crew who used breakdance to educate people about the dangers of smoking and Milton Keynes Islamic Arts Heritage and Culture Organisation who teamed up with Milton Keynes College to explore Islamic art. This year we’re looking for even more talent from every part of the UK. The awards are open for entries now at
www.epicawards.co.uk.

Speaking at the 2010 winners’ reception at the House of Lords in January, Tom Glynn from UC Crew said: “I would say to other groups wanting to get involved in the epic awards to go for it! It would be a valuable experience to get involved, meet new people and see what everyone else is doing.”

Robin Simpson, Chief Executive Voluntary Arts said :“We were impressed and amazed by the range of entries to the epic awards 2010, from breakdancers to basket weavers and painters to poets, all doing incredible things in their communities. We’re really looking forward to what the 2011 epic awards will bring as we know that there are many more excellent and innovative amateur arts and crafts groups out there.”

The foundation has announced a £250,000 donation to UK charity Nordoff Robbins, which specialises in providing music therapy sessions to people suffering from autism, dementia, depression, stroke or terminal illness. It will use the money to help maintain its music therapy unit at the BRIT school in Croydon and to fund their work at the unit.

Welsh Assembly Government Communities and Culture Committee Report

Picture
Earlier this year the Communities and Culture committee of the National Assembly for Wales published its report on access to the arts and culture in Wales. The report has been published after a long enquiry, taking evidence from artists and arts organisations across Wales. One of the report’s key recommendations is a call for a new law to ensure that people across Wales have access to arts and culture in their local area. The proposed law, or Measure, would place a statutory duty on local authorities to support arts and cultural experiences.

The Committee also wants to see less focus on purpose-built venues and more attention and investment in community-based projects to wider audiences, particularly those with disabilities or from minority groups.

Other recommendations include the desire to see increased media coverage of the arts in Wales so as to break down the notion that the arts are an elite pursuit and for the UK Government to enable the Welsh Assembly Government to provide the Arts Council of Wales with three year funding settlements with year end flexibility.

Volunteer's Week Television Opportunity

Picture
In the run up to Volunteer’s Week 2011 (1 – 7 June), ITV’s Daybreak breakfast show, hosted by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, will be featuring volunteering activities each morning for a week. As a finale, a live event will be broadcast on Friday 27 May 2011.

We would like to hear about your 2012 Games inspired activities you have planned for the 27th May that might be suitable for this live broadcast. As you might expect, there’s a challenging editorial deadline to meet here, so we’d like to hear of any Games inspired plans you have for Volunteers Week as soon as possible, if this could be televised live between 7 – 9am on Friday 27th May.

A few things to bear in mind:

• Friday 27 May is the start of a Bank Holiday weekend
• We are talking about the Friday before Volunteers Week starts, so you could also use this opportunity to get a headstart on your publicity more locally
• The Daybreak camera crew are willing to profile a television-worthy event anywhere in the UK (not necessarily London)
• Your event will need to stick out from the crowd in some way – perhaps through a 2012 Games inspired record attempt, a particularly unique volunteer opportunity or story, etc

Don’t forget any Volunteers Week events you run can be profiled on our website too.

Please reply asap to: volunteersweek@volunteering.org.uk with any event you are planning to run around this time.

Chester Mystery Plays - Sharing the Mystery

Picture
As part of a newly awarded Heritage Lottery Fund bid, Chester Mystery Plays is undertaking a range of collaborative project work between now and October 2011.

The idea is to create a new education and learning programme focusing on increasing the engagement of young people and culturally diverse people with Chester Mystery Plays. This work will involve creating a set of pilot/ taster projects with a range of groups (schools, youth, communities, adult learners, etc) around a mix of subjects - heritage / history / Christian faith, design, music, drama and writing. These will then help provide a legacy of resources, contacts, etc that will allow for future engagement (not least towards the next production cycle in 2013).

A little background on the organisation and plays themselves. Chester Mystery Plays is the one of the oldest and most complete sets of
stories/ scripts from the 1400/1500s of anywhere in the UK. They were performed up until 1575 or so and then abandoned until 1951, after
which they have been performed at least every five years since. There are four artistic professionals hired to envision the productions each
time (Artistic Director, Music Director, designer and writer) but all the other work (back- and off-stage, as well as on-stage) is done by
local amateurs. This project is a once in a generation chance really to capture what's happened since 1951 (archive and oral histories) and
also undertake a strand of public engagement (with young people, local groups and communities, new audiences and participants, etc).

If you're part of a community organisation, voluntary arts association, youth group, or something else entirely, and are
interested to explore this more, please contact:

Picture
As part of the Cultural Olympiad, the Bandstand Marathon is once more taking place throughout parks and town centres across the UK on Sunday 25 September 2011 the event is run by Superact!, and now in partnership with Making Music.

The Bandstand Marathon aims to humanise public spaces by having as many groups performing on as many bandstands and outdoor performances spaces all at the same time on the same day throughout the UK. 150 groups are needed to participate, and this year £100 is being offered to each group that participates.

To register your interest and find your nearest venue, visit the Superact website. You must register your interest before Friday 19 August 2011 to take part.

The event now in its fourth year celebrates local amateur musical talent; reflecting the amateur athletes who will be participating in the 2012 Games. It also makes use of the many historic bandstands that adorn our local parks and town centres; many of which are underused or never used at all and we hope to revitalise and reinvigorate them.

Please note that this year the event is not limited to bands, or even just instrumental ensembles - all musical groups are welcome, and encouraged to, participate.

Olympic Call for Volunteer Performers

Picture
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympics Games (LOCOG) has begun a search for adult volunteer performers to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Artistic Directors Danny Boyle and Kim Gavin are searching for 10,000 volunteer performers to fill roles as dancers, actors, percussionists and general all-round performers in the Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies respectively.

Successful applications will perform in front of a packed audience in the Olympic Stadium and a worldwide broadcast audience of more than one billion people this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of one of the largest events ever staged in the UK.

Applicants must be able to participate in up to two auditions that will take place evenings and weekends in November and early December of this year, up to two or three rehearsal sessions each week of up to four hours per session from March 2012, and a number of all day rehearsals in the three weeks leading up to each Ceremony. All of these rehearsals will take place in East London.

Bill Morris, LOCOG Director of Ceremonies, Education and Live Sites, said: ‘To deliver Ceremonies of this scale a significant amount of time commitment is required from the volunteer performers. Performers will be required to attend up to two or three rehearsals each week in London from March 2012 so applicants should consider this.

'Previous performance experience is not required for people to apply, applicants simply need lots of enthusiasm, personality, a positive attitude, huge amounts of energy and a willingness to perform in front of a stadium audience and to millions of people around the world.’

People can find more information and register their interest for this opportunity by completing the online application form www.london2012.com/ceremoniescasting The deadline for receipt of applications is Wednesday 31 August and it is not a first come first served process. To be eligible applicants must be aged 18 years or older on 1 March 2012. Only one application per person will be accepted and if LOCOG receives over 15,000 applications a computerised draw will be used to randomly create the short list for auditions.

Music and Wellbeing – the Making Music conference 2011

Picture
Area: Glasgow
Dates: 10 to 11 September

We all know how good music is for you – anyone who has sung in a choir or played an instrument for pleasure will recognise the enriching and rewarding benefits of the experience. It can help with breathing, posture, confidence and state of mind – it’s good for the brain and for the soul, and helps connect and engage communities.

Recognising the importance of music to our individual and community wellbeing, this two-day symposium, from Making Music will explore the breadth of activity and research in this area. The impact and application of music to improve mental, physical and social wellbeing has many advocates and well established initiatives demonstrating positive impact, and we will be looking at what programmes are taking place across the UK and what kind of opportunities these throw up for voluntary music.

Information on delegate rates and how to book your place will be available shortly at
www.makingmusic.org.uk/events/conference

Welsh Male Choir urgently required for 14th European Wine Song Festival in Hungary

Picture
CMI Concert Masters International are urgently seeking a Welsh male choir to participate in the 14th European Wine Song Festival in Pécs, Hungary in September of this year. This vacancy has arisen due to the late withdrawal of the invited choir for 2011, due to late arising circumstances unfortunately beyond their control.

Pécs is an attractive, old university town with a special Mediterranean atmosphere, and it has been hosting this unique festival for male choruses, vocal ensembles and soloists every year since 1993. The festival's host ensemble is the Béla Bartók Male Chorus, widely known for its excellent quality and international success.

Participating choirs are required to prepare a 10-15 minutes gala programme, focusing on convivial songs, to introduce their national musical traditions, particularly those connected with viniculture, grapes and wine. This programme may include both folklore-based and original compositions, as well as arrangements of popular songs. The festival involves around two hundred singers and besides presenting their own national programme, participants also join together in the massed Festival Chorus, performing the most well-known convivial wine songs and arrangements from several historical eras.

The festival has different venues, including the world-famous Villány Wine Region, the National Theatre in Pécs (site of the gala concert) and the Széchenyi Square. In the Square, amidst the Feast of Grapes and Wine, around ten thousand people enjoy the colourful programmes of the choirs, invited folklore ensembles and dance groups.

The full itinerary for the visit is available for download by clicking on the icon below. The dates, inclusive of travel, are Thursday September 22 to Monday September 26. All-inclusive quotes of participation per person, including four night’s stay in selected fine hotels, full board, coach transportation, and a tour manager’s service throughout your stay, along with almost unlimited enjoyment of the superb wines of Southern-Hungary and singing are detailed in full in the download. Please note however that air travel to and from Budapest is the responsibility of the accepting choir

144 - Health and safety for lone and remote workers

If you work alone on a regular basis, it is vital that you assess any risks with your line manager and identify any measures needed to ensure your personal safety. The lists featured in this briefing can be used as an aid to help you achieve this.

145 - The future of cheques

The Payments Council has set a target date of 2018 to close the cheque clearing system in the UK. If this closure goes ahead, it will mean that it will no longer be possible to make or receive payments using cheques after this date. This briefing summarises discussions that took place at the Future of Cheques workshop, organised by Voluntary Arts and run by the Payments Council in March 2011, which was attended by 20 amateur arts and crafts groups and umbrella organisations.

123sing! Cymru

Picture
On Sunday October 2, Making Music Wales and Ty Cerdd, in association with Classic FM, are inviting brass musicians and singers from across Wales to come together at the iconic Wales Millennium Centre, for a national celebration of the proud Welsh traditions of music making and song, as part of 123sing!

123sing! Cymru is a free event, wholly aimed at offering as many Welsh music makers as possible the opportunity to come together in music and song - in the capital of The Land of Song! - and collectively raise the profile of singing and voluntary music in Wales. Everyone is welcome to participate, either as individuals or in groups.

The performance will take place in the Glanfa area of the Millennium Centre at 2:00pm and all brass players and vocalists from across Wales are invited to perform as part of the massed brass band and massed choir that will assemble, under the direction of a variety of leading conductors, in a traditional Cymanfa Ganu style event.

Repertoire will consist wholly of Welsh music, and this music will be made available to download & print free from this website,
